Galette des Roi- The King's cake

On January 6, The Feast of Epiphany or Little Christmas, is a holy festival honoring the wise men coming to the infant Jesus.
A cake is made with a "fève" - a small china figurine is hidden inside the cake before baking. The lucky person who finds the "fève" is crowned the king or queen.
The bakeries all over France are full of these Galettes. Mark being the great dad he is, went and purchased one so the kids could join in on a new tradition. (He actually purchased 2, they wanted to try out the chocolate as well).
The cute lady at the bakery gave Mark 5 crowns so they all felt like kings and queens.

Can you see the prize hidden in the piece of chocolate Galette? Annie was the lucky one tonight.
The way the cake is dispersed, you cut up the cake into pie shaped pieces and when everyone is seated you put a child under the table. The person handing out the cake says "who is this piece for" the child under the table shouts out a name until everyone at the table has a piece. That way there is no slipping the prize piece to any certain person.

The prize- two little dogs.
We will be bringing this tradition home- so Browning will have a new queen or king next January.
